Mitlenatch Island Nature Preserve

is located south of Campbell River, in the Strait of Georgia.  Tidewaters from the north and south meet here.  Because of its location, the island is home to unique vegetation, the nesting area of many bird species and is a favourite "haul-out" for seals and sea lions.

Tide pools form at low tide and provide a perfect showcase for the many types of starfish, crabs and other crustaceans, as well as sea anemones which attract a striking variety of sea birds.  Beginning in May (and lasting as long as the moisture will allow) is a splendid show of field flowers. As the weather dries prickly pear cactus and Harvest Brodiaea show their summer colours.

On the way home we visit  Desolation Sound, where we often see harbour porpoise and Pacific dolphins.

This 4 hour afternoon tour departs from the coast marina in Campbell River.
