You can bet on enjoying waterfront spectacle, the oldest horserace in Spain. Started over 150 years ago when royalty summered in Sanlucar, the horses race hell-for-leather along the Atlantic and riverside beaches and it’s all free, so you’ll have spare cash for a flutter.
Always held over two alternate weeks in August, horses come under starters orders at sunset, taking advantage of the space cleared by the receding tide. Sanlucar itself is a gorgeous small town with regal architecture dating from its heyday. It’s also the home of ice cream in Spain and August is the perfect time to try one!
